Somerset Church to Become a Museum

Submitted by Andrew Poss on Thursday, September 2nd, 1:51 pm

SOMERSET, NY – The Somerset Union Methodist Episcopal Church at 8501 Lake Road, Barker, New York has recently been sold to a new owner.  This 6525 sq ft church fell into neglect and disrepair following its closure in 1969.  The roof leaks, the interior walls have significant water damage, the entry floors are rotted away, the electrical is from 1920 and there is no insulation.  The stained glass windows are in need of repair and protection.  There is no heat or air conditioning.  But the structure has great bones and only needs a little tender loving care to once again become a magnificent building.  The choice of converting the structure to a museum is important to the community because it is in an area where alternative uses for such a large structures are hard to find and the church is integrated within the historical identity of this rural community.  The property deed specifically states that the building can never be sold to another religious

Withheld Casino Funds Could Cause Budget Gap For Niagara Falls

Submitted by WGRZ Web Staff on Wednesday, September 1st, 11:19 pm

NIAGARA FALLS, NY--  The state's efforts to collect taxes on cigarettes sold to non-natives on Indian land is on hold indefinately.

The governor has suspended the tax collection following a state appellate court ruling that stopped the effort statewide.

The City of Niagara Falls says a decision by the Seneca Nation of Indians to withhold Seneca Niagara Casino slot revenue from the state will blow a four million dollar hole in their budget.

The Senecas voted to do this to protest the cigarette tax, as well as the state's growing racino business.

City Councilmember Sam Fruscione says one immediate effect-- is that this will interfere with the city's ability to pay for its new municipal complex on main street

Woman Contacts Tipline for Help With Cemetery Dispute

Submitted by WGRZ Web Staff on Friday, August 27th, 6:01 pm

Niagara Falls, N.Y. - A Niagara Falls woman contacted our tipline Friday, for help with a dispute she's having with a local cemetery.

Karen Centofanti lost her mother, father and 17-year-old son in a tragic car accident back in 1994. To help cope with their loss, Karen and her daughter, Anne Marie, visit St. Joseph's cemetery every week to spend time with their family.

But last week, Karen discovered something at her son's grave that made her and her daughter very upset; a solar cross that was once attached to the grave had broken off. And they say that's not all.

"We found a piece of granite knocked off the back of the stone," said Anne Marie Lodick. "Also, the solar panel is very loose and coming off and the way that is was broken it was tilted forward."

Anne Marie and her mother believe the cross was broken by a lawnmower or other piece of equipment used by the cemetery's maintenance workers.

Niagara Falls Third Street Development Project

Submitted by WGRZ Web Staff on Thursday, August 26th, 3:32 pm

NIAGARA FALLS, NY - Local developer Craig Avery is hoping some hard work and more than $800,000 in grants and private investments will help revitalize Third Street in Niagara Falls.

Avery bought a building located at 451 Third Street for $180,000 at an auction.  It was a foreclosure that had been vacant for more than 10 years.  He's currently gutting the building, and once renovations are complete, the building will be home to five businesses and eight apartments.

Three businesses have already signed leases or letters of intent to move in once the construction is done.  The completion date is set for some time in November.

Avery hopes renovating the once abandoned building and filling it with commercial and residential tenants will bring in more tourist traffic.
