Niagara U Presents Summer Class on Preparing the Perfect Barbecue

With Mother’s Day now on the back burner, Niagara University’s Office of Continuing Education is offering a great gift idea for all the fathers out there.

Ideal for amateur barbecuers, their friends and for Father’s Day, NU is accepting registrations for an innovative, hands-on continuing education course that will teach participants how to cook competition-quality barbecue ribs from start to finish.

The course, which will take place Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will be instructed by Robert Giordano and Roy “Honcho” Gregory of the Smokin’ Eagles International BBQ Festival. The celebrated duo will share their secrets on preparing the perfect rack of ribs right down to the smoking, including recipe selection, seasoning options, cooking techniques and food safety tips.

Class participants will have the opportunity to sample their results at the conclusion of the demonstration.

Grisanti Introduces New Medicaid Fraud Technology That Will Save Taxpayers $5 Billion

Senator Mark Grisanti (R-60) today unveiled new biometric technology during a midday press conference that will combat Medicaid fraud in New York State. Grisanti’s co-sponsorship of bill S.4384 establishes the Medicaid identification and anti-fraud technology program utilizing the science of measuring human body characteristics like fingerprinting for authentication purposes. 

This legislation will require the Department of Health to develop and implement a program using biometric technologies in hospitals, clinics and pharmacies for the purpose of fighting fraud in the Medicaid program by having patients and providers verify their identity prior to payment being made.

May Dates Announced for Free Rabies Clinics in Erie County

ERIE COUNTY, NY— Today, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz, Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein and Erie County Legislator Lynn Marinelli (District 3) announced that upcoming rabies clinics will be held in the month of May. The clinics, conducted by the County Department of Health in association with the Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society and the SPCA Serving Erie County, provide free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats, and ferrets.

“We must protect families and their pets from rabies, and these free clinics are a great way to do that,” said Poloncarz.

Mount St. Mary’s Partners with NCCC to Provide Hands-on Experience for Nursing Students

Mount St. Mary’s Hospital and Niagara County Community College Department of Nursing have formed a new partnership to offer current students who are pursuing their nursing degree hands-on experience in the medical field. Working in conjunction with the hospital’s newly established Center for Women, Mount St. Mary’s will accept four students to participate in a paid maternity nursing externship program this summer.

“This is a great opportunity for students to receive firsthand experience in maternity nursing while they are in the midst of their academic studies,” said Mount St. Mary’s Director of Maternity Services Debra Hastee, RN, MS. “Over the course of six weeks, the students will cover everything from prenatal care to labor and delivery to postpartum care and newborn nursery.”
