Niagara U Presents Summer Class on Preparing the Perfect Barbecue

With Mother’s Day now on the back burner, Niagara University’s Office of Continuing Education is offering a great gift idea for all the fathers out there.

Ideal for amateur barbecuers, their friends and for Father’s Day, NU is accepting registrations for an innovative, hands-on continuing education course that will teach participants how to cook competition-quality barbecue ribs from start to finish.

The course, which will take place Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will be instructed by Robert Giordano and Roy “Honcho” Gregory of the Smokin’ Eagles International BBQ Festival. The celebrated duo will share their secrets on preparing the perfect rack of ribs right down to the smoking, including recipe selection, seasoning options, cooking techniques and food safety tips.

Class participants will have the opportunity to sample their results at the conclusion of the demonstration.

O/N BOCES Students Have More Fun Than a Barrel of Sock Monkeys

Orleans/Niagara BOCES students at the Newfane Learning Center got to monkey around in class with a project with Human Services teacher Vicki Bashaw.  Ms. Bashaw worked with Jim Ciraolo’s class on some sewing skills all year and was impressed how well the students did with the projects.  “I found the students really responded well to hands-on stuff.  They worked in basic skills like threading, tying knots, stitching and learning proper names of basic sewing techniques.  They all found that they had strengths in certain areas and helped those in their class that weren’t as good as they are.  It was nice to see them work together as a team.”

“Technology is great, but it is keeping far too many children inside and away from the outdoors,” says Marie Schrecengost, a Fishery Biologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.  “There is a big push to connect kids with nature and there is a lot of nature available to them right here.”  Marie and Chuck Bartlett, a teacher and naturalist with the Buffalo Audubon Society have been working with the students at West Street School in the Niagara Wheatfield School District who are the recipients of a grant that has provided funding for a bird habitat and wildflower garden at the school.
